By rail — the highlight

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train)

The most memorable way to arrive. The heritage line leaves Mettupalayam (on the Coimbatore–Mettupalayam rail route) and climbs to Coonoor and Ooty using a unique rack-and-pinion system — the only one of its kind in India. Expect tunnels, steep grades, tea gardens and views that no road can match.

Reach Mettupalayam

Take any train to Mettupalayam station (from Coimbatore or beyond), or drive there.

Book the toy train via IRCTC

Seats are limited and sell out fast — book weeks ahead, especially Oct–Mar and weekends.

Ride the climb

~4–5 hours to Coonoor/Ooty. Sit on the right side (from Mettupalayam) for the best views.

Short option Already in Ooty? The Ooty–Coonoor section is a lovely ~1-hour ride each way — a perfect day-trip treat without the full climb.
By bus

Budget option: state & private buses

TNSTC and private operators run frequent buses between Coimbatore, Ooty and Coonoor. From Coimbatore the journey takes about 2.5–3 hours; from Ooty it's under an hour. Buses are the cheapest way to reach Coonoor and connect well with the railway station. For long-distance trips from Bangalore or Chennai, overnight or early-morning buses to Coimbatore or Ooty work well — then transfer to a local bus or taxi.

Getting around town Once you're in Coonoor, taxis and autos run point-to-point circuits (viewpoints, Sim's Park, factories). Upper Coonoor (Bedford) is pleasant to walk — but it's hilly, so pack comfortable shoes.

For most travellers, yes. It's a UNESCO World Heritage ride through the heart of the tea country — the single most memorable way to arrive.
Can I do Coonoor as a day trip from Ooty?
Easily — it's 18–22 km. But most visitors wish they'd stayed; the evenings in Coonoor are part of the charm.

They're winding and can be foggy after dark. If you're driving, start early and finish before dusk — especially in the monsoon.
